Tsavo East National Park is a large, open wilderness in southeastern Kenya, covering more than 11,700 square kilometres. It is also one of the country’s oldest protected areas. The landscape is not one single scene. In some places, it opens into dry savannah and wide plains. In others, riverine forest and volcanic ground give the park a rougher, more rugged feel. Most people hear about Tsavo East because of its red elephants. The Galana River is another major feature of the park. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and hundreds of bird species can all be seen here.
The park works well for both family trips and luxury safaris. Game viewing is possible throughout the year, and its location makes it easy to include in travel plans from Nairobi or Mombasa. It is a good choice for travellers who want wildlife, photography, and an open setting without too much crowding.
Tsavo East National Park
The Short Rainy Season (November to December)
The short rains bring the landscape becomes greener, migratory birds arrive, and young animals may be seen. This season can also be good for photography.
The Dry Season (June to October)
June to October is usually the easiest time to see wildlife. Water becomes limited, so animals move closer to rivers and other reliable water sources.
The Long Rainy Season (March to May)
Wildlife may spread out because water is easier to find and sightings are easier. Fewer visitors, fresh scenery, and lower accommodation rates can make this season worth considering.
Tsavo East is best known for its red elephants, often seen with the park’s reddish dust on their skin. The park also has lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, and more than 500 bird species.
Tsavo East National Park activities give travellers a practical way to experience Kenya’s wild landscapes beyond simple sightseeing. Morning game drives are the main highlight, with chances to see red elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and rich birdlife across open plains. The Galana River, rugged scenery, and quiet safari routes also make the park ideal for photography and slow wildlife viewing.
For visitors planning a Kenya safari, Tsavo East suits travellers who enjoy open space, calmer drives, and natural scenery. Activities can be flexible, from birdwatching to camping, giving families, photographers, and wildlife lovers a simple but rewarding way to explore the African wilderness.

Enailepu Tours was exceptional, it made our safari in Maasai Mara incredible with lots of unforgettable experiences. Evans picked us in Nairobi, the Land cruise was nice. The experience of the tour guide made our safari memorable, we managed to see all the big five. The most exciting was the lions and the cheetah hunting, this is what I longed to see in my life. Evans made this come true. The Maasai Culture was also memorable. I recommend Enailepu for your Safaris.

I had the most unforgettable safari experience with Enailepu Tours! We explored the stunning Mara North and Lemek Conservancies, and I was absolutely amazed. The landscapes were breathtaking, and the wildlife sightings were beyond anything I imagined. From lions to elephants, every moment felt magical. Our guide Evans, was not only knowledgeable but also super friendly and passionate, which made the whole journey even more special. Highly recommend!

My family and I went on a game drive at Maasai Mara National Park in Kenya with Evans as our tour guide, and the experience was excellent. He offered very reasonable rates and delivered a truly authentic wildlife experience. He also organizes tours to many other destinations across Kenya, not just the Maasai Mara. Evans knows the wilderness extremely well. He understands the best routes, common animal locations, and the ideal times for sightings.
